Traditional heavyweights such as Brazil, Argentina, France, England, Spain and Germany had little trouble securing qualification.

Italy, however, failed to make the cut, ESPN reports.

Their last appearance at the World Cup remains 2014, and this latest setback will deepen concerns about the direction of one of Europe’s most decorated football nations.

They fell short in the playoff route, losing on penalties to Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Elsewhere, the global picture reflects both continuity and change, with established teams joined by emerging sides eager to make their mark on the biggest stage yet.
