Self-acclaimed Dancehall King, Charles Nii Arnah Mensah, also known as Shatta wale has received the 'Keys to the City of Worcester' award in the United States.
Shatta received the keys to the City of Worcester in Massachusetts after his international show.
The musician left Ghana late last week for the USA for his international show after a failed attempt on July 1, 2017.
The Mayor of Worcester, Joseph Petty presented the award to the Dancehall king in recognition of his contributions to the arts industry.
It could be recalled that, child actor Abraham Atta received similar award in the US for his excellence in the arts industry last year.
The key also symbolizes that, the controversial artiste now possess the rights and privileges of a freeman of the city.
The keys do not actually open anything, unless the door leading to a lifetime of bragging rights has a lock on it.
The Key to the City of Worcester has been forged and given away hundreds of times over the years; each time it is a carefully considered gift from the sitting mayor to a resident of Worcester or respected visitor, presented as a recognition of their contributions.
Worcester’s Key to the City program was started in 1924 by then-mayor Michael O’Hara, whose grandson was the first to receive a redesigned version of the Key when they began production in 2012.
Today, there are actually two versions of the key. One is a plaque version, which the mayor’s office gets from Olympic Trophy on Main Street. The other, newer version is a replica of O’Hara’s key manufactured by students in the Advanced Manufacturing Program at Worcester Technical High School.
Young Ghanaian actor, Abraham Attah, who starred in the award winning ‘Beast of No Nations’ film also received the Key to the City of Worcester award last year for his ‘Excellence in the Arts’ by the city of Worcester in Massachusetts.
The award ceremony took place in Worcester is part of the ‘African Youth Excellence Awards,’ and Attah picked up the honorary award for his achievement as a young actor.
He was given the symbolic ‘Key of the City’ by the Mayor, Joesph M. Petty for his ‘‘accomplishments and rising stardom in Hollywood as a young actor.
