Road Crash On Buipe–Tamale Highway Claims 4 Lives, Fire Service Rescues 3 Others

Four people have died following a road crash on the Buipe–Tamale highway, involving a minibus and a truck at Sawaba No. 2.

The incident occurred on Tuesday, March 31, 2026.

The minibus was travelling from Buipe to Kumasi.

The Ghana National Fire Service, in a statement on Facebook, said its Buipe Fire Command responded to the crash.

Before firefighters arrived, 19 passengers had already been rescued and rushed to the Buipe Government Hospital for treatment.

Rescue teams later freed three more victims who were trapped in the wreckage of the minibus.

Despite the efforts, four people, two men and two women, died, three of whom were pronounced dead at the scene, while another died later at the hospital.

Preliminary findings suggest the trailer truck caused the collision before fleeing the scene.

The fire service said its timely intervention helped prevent further casualties and ensured that survivors received urgent medical care.

Recent fatal road crashes in Ghana

On January 11, a crash at Suhum Mankrong on the Accra-Kumasi Highway led to one death and 37 injuries.

3News reported that the 37 people who sustained varying degrees of injuries included 21 males and 17 females.

In a separate crash, seven people died, and 18 others were injured following a head-on collision between a Sprinter bus and a truck at Komenda Asamasa on the Cape Coast–Takoradi Highway.

A road crash on January 12, 2026, was one of the deadliest so far this year.

All seven victims, comprising three females, one of whom was pregnant, a baby and three males, were pronounced dead on arrival at the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital.

A female passenger who had earlier been transported to the hospital was also pronounced dead, bringing the death toll to seven.

Ghana road crash data from 2025

In 2025, Ghana recorded 2,949 road crash fatalities, bringing the total number of people killed on the roads to 63,599 since 1991.

The 2025 deaths marked the highest-ever reported road fatality cases in a single year, a situation the National Road Safety Authority said was a wake-up call for stronger stakeholder collaboration to stem the tide.

According to the latest road traffic crash statistics, the deaths comprised 2,352 males and 597 females.

The statistics indicate that the deaths occurred from 14,743 road traffic crashes in 2025.

The crashes, which resulted in 16,714 injuries, involved 24,938 vehicles.

Fatal Eid Al-Fitr road crash

YEN.com.gh reported that three people died and one was left in critical condition, following a road accident at Santasi Apire Himang in the Ashanti Region.

The incident occurred at about 5:30 a.m. on March 20, when a tipper truck loaded with sand, heading towards Himang, reportedly suffered a tyre burst.
