Kumasi, situated in the south-central region of Ghana, serves as the Ashanti Region's proud capital. As one of Ghana's largest metropolitan hubs, it boasts an illustrious reputation as the cultural and historical nucleus of the ancient Ashanti Empire.

Throughout the 17th to 19th centuries, this empire held sway over vast territories in West Africa. Famed for its profusion of diverse flora and vegetation, Kumasi has earned the affectionate moniker "The Garden City."

Location and Climate

  1. Kumasi is located in a rainforest region near Lake Bosomtwi, which is a natural lake formed by a meteorite impact.
  2. Kumasi is about 500km north of the Equator, 200km north of the Gulf of Guinea, and 255 kilometres from Accra (by car).
  3. Kumasi has a wet and dry climate, with an average annual rainfall of about 1400 mm and an average temperature of about 26°C.
  4. Kumasi has two rainy seasons: from March to July and from September to November.
  5. Kumasi has a short dry season from December to February.

History and Culture

Kumasi was founded in the late 17th century by Osei Tutu, the first king of the Ashanti Empire, who named it after a kum tree where he conducted land negotiations.

Kumasi was the seat of power and the spiritual home of the Asante people, who resisted British colonial rule and fought several wars against them.

Kumasi was largely destroyed by the British in 1874 but was rebuilt and regained some of its former glory in the 20th century.

Kumasi is still the residence of the Asantehene, the traditional ruler of the Asante, who holds court at the Manhyia Palace.

Kumasi is a centre of Asante culture, which is rich in art, music, dance, festivals, and traditions.

Kumasi is famous for its kente cloth, a colourful woven fabric that is worn on special occasions and has symbolic meanings.

Kumasi is also known for its gold jewellery, wood carvings, brass works, pottery, and leather goods.
