Heartbreak As Girl, 18, Loses Only Parent in Newtown Building Collapse

An 18-year-old girl has been left devastated and alone after losing her mother, her only surviving parent, in the tragic building collapse at Accra Newtown.

The teenager, whose identity has been withheld, recounted the heartbreaking events leading up to the incident.

According to her, she was at home with her mother on that fateful Sunday when her mother left for church.

She said her mother had urged her to hurry and join her at the service, but she hesitated.

Although she promised to follow shortly after bathing, she admitted she instead went back to sleep, with no real intention of going to church.

Moments later, while bathing around 2:43 pm, she heard frantic calls for help. Upon asking what had happened, she was told that a building had collapsed on worshippers at the Experimental Junior High School.

Filled with fear, she rushed to the scene, hoping it was not her mother’s church.

However, her worst fears were confirmed when she arrived to find the structure reduced to rubble, with residents desperately trying to rescue those trapped beneath it.

The teenager noted that her father had already passed away, leaving her mother as her sole caregiver and provider.

She described herself as broken and confused, struggling to come to terms with the sudden loss.

She added that she was expected to return to school the following day, but could not, as the one person who supported her education and well-being was no longer alive.

Old building collapses at Accra-Newtown

An old building near the Experimental Junior High School in Accra Newtown collapsed on Sunday, March 29, 2026, leaving some worshippers trapped.

According to a report by Citi FM, a group of eyewitnesses stated that a group of people had gathered inside for worship at the time of the incident.

The incident occurred on Sunday, March 29, at around 1:00 p.m., causing fear and panic among the local community and prompting an urgent rescue response.

Personnel from the Ghana Police Service and the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) are present at the site to assist in rescuing the victims.

Meanwhile, some residents were seen helping the emergency responders to pull survivors from the rubble.

The full extent of casualties or injuries has not yet been confirmed.

Authorities are expected to launch a full investigation into the cause of the collapse, amid rising concerns over building safety and structural integrity in the area.
