Ghana's former Vice President and 2024 presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has slammed his critics in the party who blame him for their defeat in the last election.

Speaking to delegates during his campaign tour of the Ashanti Region ahead of the NPP's presidential primary, slated for January 31, 2026, the former Vice President rejected claims that his Muslim faith was a key reason behind the party’s loss in the 2024 general elections.

"It is not my fault that the NPP lost the elections. It's clearly stated in the Mike Oquaye and Kyei Mensah report. Yet, the gossip persists that it is my fault," he said.

Bawumia tipped to win NPP flagbearer race

The former Vice President is in the Ashanti Region, engaging NPP delegates in a bid to convince them to re-elect him as the party's presidential candidate for the 2028 elections.

So far, five stalwarts of the NPP, including Dr Bawumia, have submitted their nomination forms to contest the flagbearer race.

The other aspirants are Kennedy Agyapong, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, the former Minister for Education and MP for Bosomtwi, Dr Bryan Acheampong, the MP for Abetifi and former Minister for Food and Agriculture, and Kwabena Agyei Agyapong, the former General Secretary.

Among the five aspirants, Dr Bawumia has been tipped to win the NPP's presidential primary in 2026, according to a survey conducted by Global InfoAnalytics, led by renowned pollster Mussa Dankwah.

Kennedy Agyapong casts doubt on Bawumia's candidacy

Meanwhile, YEN.com.gh reported that Kennedy Agyapong downplayed Dr Mahamudu Bawumia's chances of leading the NPP back to power.

The former Assin Central MP said it would take the NPP 16 years to win an election with Dr Bawumia as a flagbearer.
