The youth wing of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) is set to embark on a massive demonstration to register their displeasure at what they described as state-sponsored harassment and abuse of power

NPP supporters and sympathisers are expected to converge at Obra Spot, Kwame Nkrumah Circle, at 6:00 am on September 23, marching through some principal streets of Ghana's capital city.
The General Secretary of the NPP, Justin Kodua Frimpong; the Acting Chairman, Joseph Danquah Smith; other national executives, as well as the minority caucus in Parliament led by Alexander Afenyo-Markin, are expected to join the protest.
According to Nana B, the march is in protest of the weaponisation of state institutions against members of the NPP by the John Mahama-led administration.
"This march is a stand against the weaponisation of state institutions targeting NPP members and voices against the government. We are calling on all members and sympathisers to join in solidarity against injustices and abuse of power."
The NPP youth wing, led by Salam Mustapha, is taking this action on the backdrop of the arrest and continued detention of the party’s Bono Regional Chairman, Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye DC.
Before Abronye DC’s arrest, the Ashanti regional chairman of the NPP, Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, also known as Chairman Wontumi, as well as some social media activists of the party, were arrested and granted bail.
Abronye DC’s arrest
On Monday, September 8, 2025, armed police personnel arrested Abronye DC in Accra.
A statement released by the Ghana Police Service stated that he was arrested for “offensive conduct conducive to the breach of the peace”.
The NPP Bono Regional Chairman was consequently arraigned before Accra Circuit Court 9 on Tuesday, September 9, 2025, where the judge remanded him in custody and ordered him to return on Friday, 12 September 2025.
Upon his return on September 12, however, the presiding judge denied him bail for the second time, remanding him in police custody for another week.
Abronye DC is expected to make his third appearance in court next week, between September 18 and 19, 2025.
Political analyst demands government accountability on promises
Reacting to this in an interview with YEN.com.gh, Nabil Abubakar, a political analyst and member of the Action Movement for Bawumia 2028, stated that the planned protest aimed to pressure the government to fulfill its promises and address key national concerns, particularly issues such as the abuse of power and the harassment of political opponents.
He noted that the governing party, having previously criticized similar issues while in opposition, must not repeat the same mistakes.
The political analyst added that the protest could send a strong signal that accountability was expected from those in power, not just opposition parties.
"The planned protest is essentially a way to pressure the current government to fulfill its promises and address key national concerns, particularly issues like galamsey that have severely damaged our water bodies and left institutions like the Ghana Water Company overwhelmed," he said
"While the NPP was painted negatively by the opposition in the past, the tables have now turned, and the governing party must demonstrate that it can solve the very problems it once criticized. The protest could send a strong signal that accountability is not just demanded from opposition parties but from those in power as well," he added.

Abronye DC declares a hunger strike
Meanwhile, YEN.com.gh reported that Abronye DC reportedly declared a hunger strike in protest of his continued detention.
This was after the Accra Court denied him bail for the second time following his arrest on September 8, 2025.
According to his lawyer, Enoch Afoakwa, Abronye DC embarked on the hunger strike because he believed his arrest and detention was politically motivated persecution.
