Biography of late Black Stars striker Manuel Junior Agogo

Ghanaians are still struggling to recover from the shock of Junior Agogo’s death.

The death of former Ghana Black Stars player, occurred on August 22, 2019.

He suffered stroke since 2015, but this was well kept a secret until sometime in 2018 when people got to know about the condition of Agogo.

Though he did not play much tournament with the team, Agogo is well remembered for his sterling performance for Ghana during the CAN 2008 competition.

That was when he made his name, as he always scored a desperate goal for the team.

Since his death, YEN.com.gh has gathered some information about the former football legend that many did not know about.

Full name: Agogo’s full name was Manuel Junior Agogo.

Date of birth: Junior Agogo was born on August 1, 1979.

Place of birth: Junior Agogo was born in Accra, Ghana.

Number of siblings: Agogo had 10 other siblings, including himself making 11 children for their parents.

Education: The fallen football star started his basic education with the Ridge Church School in Accra but did not complete there. This is because Agogo moved to join his family in the United Kingdom, where he continued with his junior high school education.

He returned to Ghana for his senior secondary school education at the St. Augustine’s College in the Central Region of Ghana.

Interestingly, Agogo was a good dancer, no wonder he displayed some good dance moves shortly before his death.

He was representing St. Augustine’s College in dancing competitions rather than soccer.

Therefore, his rise to becoming a football legend undoubtedly surprised his peers.

Retirement: Junior Agogo retired from active football in 2012. He revealed that he wanted to turn his attention to the kitchen and own a restaurant. He, however, made a turn and opened a fitness and training business. He suffered stroke three years later.

Football clubs and teams: Agogo started his football career at Sheffield in the UK in 1995, having trained in the academy. He later moved to the Major League Soccer (MLS) in the United States, and played for Chicago Fire, San Jose Earthquakes, and Colorado Rapid.

Years later, Agogo moved back to the UK and joined the Queens Rangers Football Club, then later to Barnet.

A few years later he was back in England, first with QPR, before he moved on to Barnet.

Agogo scored ‘needed’ goals during the 2002-03 season, which earned him a move to Bristol Rovers where he made over 100 appearances and scored 41 league goals.

In 2006 he joined Nottingham Forest where he scored 20 league goals over a two-year period.

The hardworking footballer later joined Egyptian side Zamalek and then moved to Greece to be with Apollon Limassol.

In 2008, Agogo was called up into the Black Stars team where he played in the CAN 2008 tournament.

In fact, it was this time the many Ghanaians came to know and started following him.

He scored 12 goals in 27 appearances for Ghana, and his effort in helping Ghana secure the third place in the CAN 2008 tournament will forever remain with Ghanaians.

Agogo’s death: Junior Agogo died on August 22, 2019, after battling stroke for four years. He died in a hospital in London.

He had earlier revealed his struggle with the stroke when Ghanaians became aware of his condition in 2018.
