Brazilian bodybuilding champion Valter de Vargas Aita, 41, lost his life after a reported violent altercation with his girlfriend in Chapecó, Santa Catarina, on Sunday, September 7, 2025.

Police confirmed that the fight escalated into a deadly attack, leaving the athlete fatally stabbed.

According to investigators, as cited by Generation Iron, neighbours alerted authorities after hearing the dispute inside the apartment building.

Per reported, Aita suffered multiple stab wounds to the neck, face, back, and abdomen before collapsing in the stairwell while attempting to escape.

Aita's girlfriend hospitalized and under investigation

The suspect, a 43-year-old woman who lived with Aita, sustained life-threatening injuries during the confrontation and was taken to a local hospital. Police stated that if she survives, she will face murder charges.

Authorities also revealed that the woman had an active arrest warrant for armed robbery and another serious crime, further intensifying the investigation into her role in the deadly incident.

Aita's bodybuilding career

Valter Aita built an inspiring career in bodybuilding, competing for more than a decade at both state and international levels.

According to People, he became a six-time state champion and secured a runner-up finish at the 2024 World Fitness Federation Vice World Championships.

Beyond competition, Aita worked as a trainer, dedicating his time to guiding others in their fitness journeys. His local gym announced it would remain closed the day after his death as a mark of respect, posting the tribute:

“Forever in our hearts.”

This tragedy adds to a series of violent incidents within the bodybuilding community. Earlier in June, Colombian bodybuilding champion Zunilda Hoyos Mendez was found dead in Spain after being brutally attacked by her partner, who reportedly took his own life following the murder.

Meanwhile, reports sugegst that the Brazilian Civil Police division has opened a full investigation into Aita’s death. Authorities are working to uncover the exact motive behind the attack while awaiting updates on the condition of the suspect.
