Noah Lyles has to be the most talked-about name currently at the Olympic Games, and you don’t need a searchlight to figure out why.

The young American sprinter recently clinched gold at the Paris 2024 showpiece, setting a personal best time of 9.79 seconds to claim first place ahead of Jamaica’s Kishane Thompson and fellow American, Fred Kerley.

However, while the 27-year-old might currently rule the 100-metre scene, the same cannot be said for the 200-metre event.

The highly rated sprinter is poised to participate in the 200-metre heats, with the aim of qualifying for the semi-finals and the final, which would afford him the chance to clinch another gold medal.

Nonetheless, it appears Lyles is not keen on just making up the numbers in the 200-metre category.

The world champion recently spoke about the possibility of eclipsing the world record currently held by Usain Bolt.

In an interview captured by Olympics.com, Lyles reflected:

“When you reach the top, you start to ask yourself, ‘What do I need to do to be considered the greatest when I leave the sport?’” said Lyles, following his victory in the 200 meters at the US Olympic Team Trials 2024.
“Breaking a world record is one of two goals I still want to achieve: winning an Olympic gold and setting a world record.”

As Lyles prepares for Paris 2024, he faces a tough challenge. To check off his first goal, he will need to overcome competitors like Jamaica’s Bryan Levell and Canada’s Andre De Grasse, before looking to eclipse the world record of 19.19-second currently held by Usain Bolt, to make history.
