Manchester United kicked off their 2023/24 season with a hard-fought 1-0 win over Fulham at Old Trafford.
Alejandro Garnacho had a golden chance to double the lead late in the game but missed a sitter after a pass from Marcus Rashford.
After the full-time whistle, the Argentine winger was spotted interacting with Man United's coach, Ruud Van Nistelrooy.
It looked like the Red Devils would have to settle for a 0-0 draw after failing to take their chances, but new signing Joshua Zirkzee scored in the 87th minute to make it a dream Premier League debut.
The Dutchman, who started on the bench, toe-poked Garnacho's cross to send the fans into pandemonium.
What was Van Nistelrooy's reaction?
Moments later, Erik ten Hag's side had the opportunity to seal the win after Fulham defenders failed to clear the ball. Rashford was through on goal, and instead of scoring himself, he squared it to Garnacho.
The youngster failed to tap into an empty net, which some have called the miss of the season. If the result were different, fans would be unhappy with the winger.
After the final whistle, Garnacho was standing alone near the tunnel. He embraced the young forward and briefly chatted with him, perhaps about the miss.
Man United face Brighton in their next match.
Zirkzee scores match winner for Man United
Joshua Zirkzee fired Man United to their first win of the 2024/25 season.
The hitman got off the mark with a scrappy finish and salvaged a largely uninspiring Premier League opener from Erik ten Hag's side.
Garnacho sets new record with assist
YEN.com.gh earlier reported Garnacho, who provided the assist for Manchester United's only goal versus Fulham, equalled a record previously held by Portuguese talisman Cristiano Ronaldo.
According to the data provided, no teenager in Manchester United's history has contributed to more Premier League goals than Garnacho.
With his 17th assist since debuting in 2022, Garnacho has equalled the record for the most Premier League goal involvements by any teenager in the club’s history.
