Russell Hoult, the former goalkeeper who made 141 Premier League appearances across a 20-year career, is now receiving palliative care after being diagnosed with two terminal conditions.
The 52-year-old played for Leicester City, Derby County, West Bromwich Albion, Notts County, and Portsmouth, leaving an indelible mark on English football.

According to the Daily Record, Hoult was first diagnosed with primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC) in 2023, followed by a stage four bile duct cancer (cholangiocarcinoma) diagnosis in 2024. Medical professionals have since confirmed that both conditions are terminal.
Per the same source, Hoult’s children, Kayleigh and Carter, both 24, have channelled their energy into supporting their father by running the Leicester Half Marathon to raise funds for AMMF – The Cholangiocarcinoma Charity.
Kayleigh explained the motivation behind their efforts, highlighting the importance of turning personal hardship into something positive for others battling the same conditions.
The JustGiving page set up by the siblings has already raised over £7,000 from more than 300 donors.
Kayleigh emphasised her father’s unwavering strength and humour, noting that his courage continues to inspire the family during this incredibly difficult period.

“The support from the football community and beyond has been incredible,” she added. “Dad is truly overwhelmed by how much has been raised, and it gives us hope to continue helping others in his name.”
