Apostolic Church pastor sued by members for allegedly altering his age

The General Secretary of the Apostolic Church of Ghana, Apostle Alex Kwaku Ofosu, has been dragged to court for allegedly altering his age in order to continue staying in office.

Apostle Ofosu has been sued by three members of the church – Elder Emmanuel Tetteh Nyumgor, Elder William Okyere and Elder Ernest Teye.

The plaintiffs maintain that the church’s General Secretary is past the required retirement age, but has refused to step aside.

According to them, Apostle Ofosu attained the age of 65 as far back as on January 28, 2018.

The plaintiffs aver that he has “purposely misrepresented his date of birth to the church, claiming that it was January 28, 1956, when, indeed and in fact, his actual date of birth is January 28, 1953.”

Graphic Online reports that the three men have also sued the Apostolic Church, Ghana and the National Council of the Apostolic Church, which is the governing body of the church.

They are seeking an order from the Accra High Court to force Apostle Ofosu to step down from his post as General Secretary of the church.

They also want the church and its National Council to constitute a committee to look into their petition for Apostle Ofosu’s removal.

The plaintiffs further revealed that Apostle Ofosu has two different dates of birth for his passport and in the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) database.

Meanwhile, Apostle Ofosu has denied the allegation leveled against him, describing the plaintiffs as “vicious petitioners” who are only interested in tarnishing his image.

I wish to state emphatically that I am not liable or guilty of the offence of dishonesty or conduct that will bring the esteemed office of General Secretary of our reputable church into disrepute, ridicule or contempt,” he said.

None of the petitioners has ever contacted me about this matter, be it for clarification or otherwise. Rather, they have, in the first instance, escalated the matter to the National Council members and made an emphatic scandalous statement to denigrate my hard-earned reputation. It is very unfortunate that officers of the church who claim to be in good standing can be so vicious,” he added.
