Throwback photos and brief history of top artistes in Ghana

Stonebwoy, Sarkodie and Shatta Wale are currently the three most popular artistes in Ghana.

These three artistes have been in the limelight over a decade now and have since been thrilling Ghanaians to their hit music.

Their history depicts that they have been through all the hustle to become the successful musicians they are today.

Here, YEN.com.gh brings you throw back photos and a brief history of Ghana's three top artistes.

1. Stonebwoy

Known in real life as Livingston Etse Satekla, Stonebwoy was born in Ashaiman in the Greater Accra region of Ghana on March 5, 1988 and began making music in his early school days.

He realized his talents and abilities as a lyricist and script writer at an early age, remembering writing and acting drama pieces as far back as fourth year in primary school.

He studied at Methodist Day Secondary School the same year with rapper Sarkodie where he gained his High School Certificate. He continued his tertiary education at University of Professional Studies to earn a degree in Marketing in 2013.

It was through these rap battles and his style of music which caught the eye of Samini to sign him to his "Samini Music" record label

Stonebwoy began to enter the main stream music scene in 2009. Later, he released his first official single 'Climax' featuring Samini under Samini Music record label.

Since his first single, Stonebwoy has been thrilling Ghanaians with bangers such as 'Pull Up', 'Go Higher', 'Mightylele', 'Wogbejeke', 'Bawasaba' and recently Kpoo Keke among others.

Stonebwoy has three albums to his credit and has won top awards including BET Best International Act in 2015 and VGMA Artiste of the Year in the same year.

Stonebwoy set an impressive record at the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards 2018 by winning the Reggae/Dancehall Artiste of the Year award for four years in a roll.

He has won other local and international awards making him one of the most successful reggae dancehall artistes to have come out of Ghana.

2. Sarkodie

Sarkodie, the fourth of five children, was born and raised in Tema, to his mother Maame Aggrey. Sarkodie started rapping at a young age and continued throughout his educational career.

He attended Tema Methodist Senior High School. He earned a degree in graphic design from IPMC.

Sarkodie began his instrumental career as an underground rapper. He appeared on Adom FM's popular rap competition Kasahare Level. It was through rap battles that he met his former manager Duncan Williams of Duncwills Entertainment.

He also met musicians Edem and Castro who introduced him to Hammer of The Last Two, an established record producer.

Hammer decided to feature Sarkodie on two songs off the Volta Regime album after being impressed with his rap flows.

After this exposure, Sarkodie recorded his debut album Makye in 2009. His first single "Baby", featuring Mugeez of the duo R2Bees, became an instant hit and made Sarkodie a household name within the Ghanaian music industry.

Since then, Sarkodie has been thrilling Ghanaians to hit songs like 'Good Bye', 'You Go Kill Me', 'Adonai', 'Chingam', 'Sarkodie' among others.

Sarkdie has four albums to his credit and has won top awards like BET Best International Act in 2012 and won VGMA Artiste of the Year in the same year.

He has won other local and international awards making him one of the most successful rappers to have come out of Ghana.

3. Shatta Wale

Charles Nii Armah Mensah Jr., (born October 17, 1984) is a Ghanaian-born producer and reggae-dancehall musician.

His musical career began during his high school days at the Winneba Secondary School where he learned to play keyboard and received routine vocal training at the school's music class department, then known as Doggy.

Wale is also an actor, having appeared in the films Never Say Never, The trial of Shatta Wale and Shattered Lives.

Having achieved street credibility in a fairly undeveloped Ghanaian dancehall genre at the time, he achieved popularity with his 2004 single, "Moko Hoo", which featured Tinny.

Then known in the industry as Bandana, the song earned him a Ghana Music Awards nomination.

There afterwards, Bandana went missing in the music circus for nearly a decade until rebranding himself in 2013. He began releasing music under a new name, Shatta Wale, under his own record label SM For Lyf Records.

His best known song is "Dancehall King" which he released in 2013 led to winning the Artiste of the Year at the 2014 edition of the Ghana Music Awards.

Since bouncing back 2013 with the hit single 'Dancehall King', Shatta Wale has been thrilling Ghanaians to hit music like 'Everybody Like My Thing', 'Baby Chop Kiss', 'Kakai' 'Ayoo', 'London Girls', 'Bullet Proof' and recently 'My Level'.

He has won other local and international awards making him one of the most successful reggae dancehall artistes to have come out of Ghana.
