SHS girl Bernice Owusu reportedly dies after battling cancer (photo)

- Bernice Owusu, a 19-year-old SHS girl, has reportedly died from cancer

- The 19-year-old girl was diagnosed of cancer after she had her eyes swollen

- Bernice's parents could not afford treatment leaving the cancer to spread

- Help came through some donors but it seemed too late

Bernice Owusu, a young senior high school (SHS) girl, has reportedly passed way after being diagnosed with a Rhabdomyosarcoma, a form of cancer that develops from skeletal muscle cells.

The 19-year-old Bernice came up in the news after it emerged that her parents could not afford treatment for though her eyes had swollen and were nearly popping out of her head.

According to reports on social media, Bernice who was about to graduate from SHS had woken up one day feeling an unusual headache which affected her eyes prior to her WASSCE.

After some first aid medications by her parents, young Bernice went write her exams and came back home with her situation not improving.

She was sent to the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital where scans revealed that she had cancer. With her parents unable to pay for the cost of treatment, Bernice's condition kept worsening and it took the intervention of some good samaritans to help raise funds for her initial treatment.

According to one of the helpers who came on TV Africa Wednesday, July 31, 2019, she got to know about Bernice's plight through an accountant in the SHS the girl was attending and she decided to help.

With her US-based brother, they circulated images of Bernice's disturbing condition on social media in order to get people donate for her surgery.

A GoFundMe account was also opened to get donations from across the world. The latest update to donors on the account indicated that the cancer had spread and Bernice needed to undergo chemotherapy starting August 6, 2019, before the surgery.

But it was not meant as Bernice reportedly passed away before the start of the chemo treatment.

A post shared on Facebook on August 3, 2019, and sighted by YEN.com.gh indicated that the young lady had passed.

The news of Bernice's death has got many social media users heartbroken since it came up.

It must be noted that while the news of the death has gained a lot of attention on Facebook, there has not been any information on the GoFundMe account yet.
