After receiving the coveted award, he remarked that he was very grateful for all the people who had been supporting his career in addition to urging African-Americans to visit home.

Sarkodie year of return ambassador
The minister of Tourism, Culture, and Creative Arts, Barbara Oteng Gyasi, named the renowned rapper as an ambassador for the Year of Return. The minister bestowed him with this honor on Wednesday, 30th December 2019, at the Creative Arts Industry Forum that took place at the National Theatre.
The minister acknowledged that Sarkodie had made great achievements and enormous contributions to the creative arts industry of Ghana. During his acceptance speech at the BET Hip Hop Awards, he urged all the African-Americans to go back home as Ghana was marking the Year of Return.
This year is the Year of Return, and I will urge each one of you here to take a trip back home… it's going down in Ghana, so if you are coming to Africa, choose Ghana, said the rapper.
Ghana is marking precisely 400 years ever since the initial black slaves landed in Jamestown, Virginia, United States. Therefore, the Year of Return is an initiative urging people from diaspora to come back home. There has been a remarkable array of celebrities who have heeded to the call and visited Ghana, such as Akon, Steve Harvey, among others.

Recognition by renowned artist Akon
One of the significant highlights in Sarkodie's life as a musician is the recognition by African-American R&B singer Akon. Akon had visited Ghana during the launch of the initiative, dubbed Year of Return. The president of Ghana Nana Akufo-Addo launched the initiative in a bid to get the blacks living in the diaspora to visit the country and appreciate both the roots and African culture.
When asked to name the top three Ghanaian artists who have been putting the West African countries on the map, he alleged that Sarkodie was one of the singers doing a great job in that spectrum.
I only know them when the songs get to the top, and in Ghana, the one that has reached the top is Sarkodie, said Akon.
