In a vote marred by many altercations, Bagbin polled 138 votes against Ocquayes 136 with one vote being declared as spoilt.

The election of Bagbin came as a surprise as Ocquaye had been thought to be the favourite since he was nominated by the ruling NPP side.

The process turned out to be a very tenuous and prolonged one as chaos erupted many times.

One of the notable confusions that happened was when Tema West MP Carlos Ahenkorah allegedly snatched ballot papers during the counting of votes.

From what YEN.com.gh has gathered, the number of votes for Ocquaye had been tallied giving the NDC an indication that their choice had won.

But while putting the ballot papers together, Ahenkorah who is from the NPP side snatched some of the papers and bolted.

In a video sighted by YEN.com.gh, Ahenkorah who was dressed in a brown kaftan running and being chased by other MPs.

His actions nearly turned the process into fisticuffs with some of the NDC MPs who accosted him.

Photos from the near-altercation show Ahenkorah being restrained by his colleagues after he was caught by the NDC MPs.
