President Akufo-Addo elected ECOWAS Chair again

- Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo was elected the new chair of ECOWAS on Monday, September 7, 2020

- He was elected at the ongoing 57th ECOWAS Summit

- President Akufo-Addo has however been given the mandate to chair the ECOWAS for a year

- He was given the mandate at its extraordinary session held on Wednesday, February 3, 2021

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has once again been elected as the Chairman of the Authority of Heads of State and Government of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

Akufo-Addo was given another nod to serve the commission as Chair of the Sub Regional body for another one-year term.

He was given the mandate at its extraordinary session held on Wednesday, February 3, 2021.

In a press statement, the ECOWAS said a consensus emerged from the heads of state and governments that Akufo-Addo continues for a second term as Chair of the ECOWAS Authority to oversee the implementation of some reforms.

YEN.com.gh earlier reported that President Akufo Addo was first elected as ECOWAS chair on Monday, September 7, 2020.

He was elected to take over the mantle of leadership from the President of Niger, His Excellency Mahamadou Issoufou, for a period of one year.

This was announced by Eugene Arhin, Director of Communications at the Presidency, on his Facebook wall.

Few weeks after the president's election as ECOWAS chair, he had to address some issues that were going on in Mali.

President Akufo-Addo in his capacity as the ECOWAS chair held a meeting with a delegation in Mali.

The meeting which was held on Sunday, October 11, 2020, saw president Akufo-Addo meeting with the President of Mali's Transitional Government, His Excellency Bah N’daw.

In a post shared on Facebook, President Akufo-Addo noted that he also held separate meetings with the Vice President, Colonel Assimi Goita; the Prime Minister, Moctar Ouane; Members of the Diplomatic Corps.

At a meeting held at the Koulouba Palace, the seat of the Malian Presidency, President N’daw applauded the decision by President Akufo-Addo to convene a meeting to resolve the deadlock in Mali immediately after his election as ECOWAS Chair.
