According to Gyamfi, who is the NDC’s National Communications Director, the former president will be the flagbearer “by hook or crook.”

Gyamfi disclosed this while addressing students at the University of Cape Coast as filed by Ghanaweb.

President Akufo-Addo defeated the former president in the 2020 election to secure another four-year term.

He collected 51.302% of the votes cast against the latter’s 47.359%.

The votes difference between the two candidates stood at 517, 231, representing a four-percentage point, one of the highest since 1996.

The Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) in a recent survey projected that the NDC will win the 2024 election, but with a different person as the party’s flagbearer.

Gyamfi dismissed the EIU’s call for a flagbearer change as unnecessary, arguing that the former president is the surest bet to regaining power in 2024.

In other news, the MP for Ashaiman Constituency, Ernest Norgbey, insisted that the NDC does not need to field a new candidate for the 2024 presidential elections.

“NDC cannot go into this election with any other candidate rather than John Dramani Mahama,” Norgbey told Joy News.

He said the party needs to ride on the shoulders of the former president who has been in the system for a very long time and who can win power in 2024.

“So in as much as I believe in their predictions that we are going to win power in 2024 massively and even win the majority in parliament, I cannot understand their methodology for saying that we can only win if we introduce a new face,” he wondered.

He joined the MP for Builsa South, Dr. Clement Apaak, in rooting for Mahama to be retained as the presidential candidate of the NDC for the 2024 elections.

Dr. Apaak, a former presidential staffer, warned that it will be calamitous without the former president on the ticket.

Without mincing words, he noted that the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) will easily break the eight years power cycle should the NDC present a new candidate for the 2024 elections.
