Actress Jada Pinkett Smith has disclosed that she and Will Smith were separated for six years before the 2022 Oscars incident, where Smith slapped Chris Rock.

In an interview with People magazine, Pinkett revealed that they have been living completely separate lives since 2016.

“We’re still figuring it out. We’ve been doing some really heavy-duty work together. We just got a deep love for each other, and we are going to figure out what that looks like for us," she said in the interview promoting her upcoming memoir, Worthy.

Are Jada Pinkett and Will Smith working on divorce?

When the host, Hoda Kotb, pointed out that this separation isn't a divorce on paper, Jada affirmed, saying, "Right."

She also said that while she has considered a legal divorce, she hasn’t been able to bring herself to it.

"I made a promise that there will never be a reason for us to get a divorce. I haven't been able to break that promise," the 52-year-old said.

Jada also opened up about the factors contributing to the fracture in their relationship.

"I think we were both kind of just still stuck in our fantasy of what we thought the other person should be," she revealed

Why public appearances together despite separation?

Asked why she and Will keep up the appearance of being a happily married couple.

She said:

"I think just not being ready yet, still trying to figure out between the two of us how to be in partnership, and in regards to how we present that to people, and we hadn’t figured that out," she said.

Jada Pinkett on Oscar Awards slap

After Smith's infamous Oscar Awards slap against Chris Rock, YEN.com.gh reported that Jada called on her hubby and the comedian to forgive and heal from the incident transmitted to live audiences worldwide.

The Red Table Talk host was speaking ahead of a special alopecia episode, Jada, referenced the controversial incident.

She said:

"The state of the world today, we need them both. And we all actually need one another more than ever. Until then, Will and I are continuing to do what we have done for the last 28 years, and that keeps figuring out this thing called life together. Thank you for listening."
