Details of Abu Trica's new lawyers and their achievements have emerged ahead of his upcoming court appearance in the United States, according to a reputable reporter in the country.

Abu Trica, whose real name is Frederick Kumi, was extradited from Ghana to the US on July 9, 2026, and entered a not-guilty plea a day later to charges of conspiracy to commit wire fraud, conspiracy to commit money laundering, and a forfeiture allegation.

Prosecutors allege he and co-accused Daniel Yussif led a group that used AI-generated fake personas to target elderly Americans, defrauding victims of more than $8 million since 2023.

If convicted, he faces up to 20 years in prison on each count.

His case, being heard by Judge John R. Adams in the US District Court for the Northern District of Ohio, is currently scheduled for a pretrial conference around August 24-25, 2026, with a jury trial set for September 8 should no plea deal be reached.

Abu Trica's new lawyers ahead of court date

Following his extradition, Abu Trica was initially represented by Henry Hilow, a veteran Ohio criminal defence attorney admitted to the Ohio Bar in 1981, who spent roughly 11 years as an assistant county prosecutor before moving into private practice.

He has now brought on Eric F. Long and Lucas D. Trott, both attorneys at Friedman Nemecek Long & Grant, L.L.C., a Cleveland-based criminal defence firm.

The firm, founded by Ian N. Friedman, is recognised as one of Ohio's top criminal defence teams, having represented clients across the US and as far as Europe, Asia, and South America.

Friedman himself has tried more than 150 jury cases to verdict and serves as an adjunct professor of Cybercrime at Cleveland-Marshall College of Law, a background that could prove relevant given the AI-driven nature of the allegations against Abu Trica.

Long and Trott themselves bring notable trial experience to the case.

Trott, alongside Friedman and fellow attorney Madelyn Grant, represented a mother of four indicted on multiple serious charges, including aggravated murder, in a case tied to the drowning death of her young son.

Long, working alongside attorney Tyler Walchanowicz, secured a full acquittal after a one-week trial for a client facing serious charges involving a minor in Cuyahoga County.

US Embassy shares data on global online scams

According to an earlier report by YEN.com.gh, the US Embassy in Accra shared data revealing the alarming global scale of online scam networks, warning that scam operations are becoming increasingly sophisticated in how they target victims.

The embassy disclosed that more than 400,000 individuals from over 70 countries have been recruited into forced labour and compelled to carry out cyber scams, defrauding victims worldwide.
