2025 WASSCE: Students at Konongo Wesley SHS Attack Teachers Against Exam Cheating

The 2025 West Africa Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) turned chaotic at Wesley Senior High School, at Konongo in the Ashanti Region, after some students rioted.

They attacked teachers for being too strict with the Christian Religious Studies exam invigilation.

3News reported that the angry candidates pelted stones and sachet water, causing the teachers to run for their dear lives.

They attacked the House Mistress on the night of Sunday, September 7, 2025.

The pelting of her apartment with stones following her reported decision not to allow cheating during the Christian Religious Studies (CRS) paper.

They also slashed down cocoyam, maize, cassava and plantain in a garden belonging to the senior House Mistress.

One of the teachers said the students finished their exam on Friday, but returned to the school in their uniforms to launch the attack on Sunday.

The teacher said there was a tip-off about the attack and threats against the teachers.

The Ghana Education Service earlier warned that any supervisor or invigilator caught engaging in examination malpractice will be dismissed.

Its own officials have been implicated in alleged corruption.

WAEC shuts down WASSCE exam centre in Kumasi

On September 5, the West African Examinations Council shut down an examination centre in Kumasi after uncovering examination malpractices during the WASSCE.

The incident at the Adventist Day Senior High School in Kumasi led to the relocation of 936 candidates to the regional WAEC office, where they were to sit for their English Language paper under stricter supervision.

David Oppong, the Kumasi Metro Director of Education, said:

“So this has come to our attention of the Regional Director, and we are yet to do our investigation…[For now] the students have been bused to the WAEC centre to go and take the examination, and it is very unfortunate."

About the 2025 WASSCE

The 2025 WASSCE started on August 5 with practical tests, while the written papers began on August 20 and will end on September 19.

The candidates will be sitting for 65 subjects in all, and each of them will be taking an average of eight subjects.

A total of 461,640 candidates are taking the 2025 WASSCE, comprising 207,381 male candidates and 254,259 female candidates.

The examination will be conducted in about 701 examination centres across the country.

Teacher caught with leaked questions

YEN.com.gh reported that an invigilator at Armed Forces SHS in Burma Camp in Accra was caught with leaked WASSCE questions on his phone during a routine inspection.

The WAEC team grew suspicious due to the invigilator’s outfit and later discovered exam questions on his device.

The examination body took possession of his phone and has demanded a written explanation from the teacher while it probes the incident.
