Tragic Accident Claims Life of Deaf UEW Student, Several Other Learners Injured

Grief has enveloped the University of Education, Winneba (UEW) community following a tragic car accident on Saturday, September 20, 2025, which claimed the life of a Level 200 deaf student and left several others injured.

The incident occurred around 11:00 am near Peki in the South Dayi District of the Volta Region as the students were returning home after completing their final examinations.

Details of the tragic Peki incident

The deceased has been identified as Gloria Afidemenyo, a Level 200 student from the Education for the Hearing Impaired (EHI) Unit of UEW.

Like the other victims, she was travelling home to her family when the mini-bus suffered a flat tyre and subsequently overturned.

The sprinter bus was en route from Winneba to Kpando and Hohoe, carrying students along with their belongings loaded on top.

Emergency response and ongoing investigation

Emergency services swiftly responded and rushed to the scene, providing immediate assistance to the victims. The injured students were transported to the Peki Government Hospital for treatment.

Authorities have confirmed that an investigation into the precise cause of the accident is underway to determine all contributing factors.

The Volta Regional Police PRO, C/Insp. Gomado confirmed the incident to YEN.com.gh when contacted.

However, he could not provide additional information, stating that he had yet to receive the full report from the South Dayi police command.

Kia truck plunges off Gbi-Wegbe bridge

In other news, YEN.com.gh reported that a Kia truck transporting salt fell off the Gbi-Wegbe bridge in Hohoe on Saturday night, September 13, 2025, leaving four people injured.

Two of the victims sustained severe injuries and were rushed to the hospital by police officers who happened to be passing by.

Local residents, led by traditional leader Zikpuitor Prosper Hayibor, quickly mobilised to rescue the trapped occupants. He explained that whenever such incidents occur, the youth are gathered to assist in rescue operations, and this time was no different.

On Sunday morning, September 14, efforts to retrieve the submerged truck from the water proved unsuccessful. Even with the assistance of a caterpillar machine provided by the Hohoe Municipal Assembly, the vehicle could not be lifted.

Bisa Kdei survives near-fatal crash

Previously, YEN.com.gh reported that Bisa Kdei was reportedly involved in a serious car accident. The incident left his black SUV badly mangled, sparking concern among fans on social media.

The Mansa hitmaker shared a video of the wrecked vehicle on his Snapchat page and seized the moment to give thanks.

Sources close to the musician confirmed that he emerged from the crash safe without sustaining major injuries. Bisa Kdei is said to be recovering after the near-fatal incident and has since received well-wishes from Ghanaians across the board.
