Police and military personnel have been deployed to Laboma Beach in Accra as authorities finalise preparations for a large-scale demolition exercise targeting structures linked to the city's recurring flood crisis.

The Greater Accra Regional Security Council (REGSEC) is coordinating the operation, which forms part of a wider enforcement effort launched in the wake of the devastating floods that struck several parts of the capital on June 29.

Security officers were positioned around the beach on Friday, restricting public access to sections of the area while officials completed logistical arrangements for the exercise.

Citi News reported that demolition is set to focus on structures erected without authorisation within the Laboma Beach enclave.

Authorities have consistently identified developments on waterways, wetlands and other restricted zones as a primary driver of flooding in Accra, arguing that such constructions obstruct the natural flow of water and overwhelm drainage infrastructure during heavy rainfall.

The Friday deployment follows a series of earlier interventions, including drain desilting and preliminary demolitions, that REGSEC initiated in response to the June 29 disaster. Those floods affected multiple communities across the capital and renewed pressure on authorities to take decisive and lasting action.

REGSEC Defends the Operation

Officials from the Greater Accra Regional Security Council have framed the exercise as a necessary step to protect lives and property rather than a punitive measure.

The council has indicated that enforcement actions will continue in all affected areas until compliance with planning and environmental regulations is achieved.

Authorities have also warned that the current rainy season heightens the urgency of restoring natural drainage channels, with further incidents of flooding remaining a real risk if obstructions within waterways are not removed.
