Germany has released an official list of 70 occupations experiencing significant worker shortages, offering foreign professionals a clearer picture of where their skills are most needed across the country.

The list was published by the German government as part of efforts to support the country's Skilled Immigration Act, which created new legal pathways for workers from outside the European Union to live and work in Germany.

As stated on the government's official website, the purpose of the list is to "lay out comprehensive information for (prospective) skilled workers and employers on the regulations of the new Skilled Immigration Act."

The 70 roles are grouped into six broad categories: managers, science and engineering professionals, health professionals, teaching professionals, and information and communications technology (ICT) professionals.

The management category alone covers 12 roles, ranging from manufacturing and construction managers to health services managers, aged care services managers, and education managers.

What the 70 roles cover

The science and engineering segment is the largest on the list, featuring 24 occupations. These include civil engineers, mechanical engineers, electrical engineers, chemical engineers, and environmental engineers, alongside roles such as building architects, landscape architects, cartographers, and graphic and multimedia designers.

Health professionals account for 13 positions, covering generalist and specialist medical practitioners, nursing professionals, midwifery professionals, dentists, pharmacists, physiotherapists, audiologists, speech therapists, and optometrists, among others.

The teaching professionals category spans 12 roles, including university and higher education teachers, secondary and primary school teachers, early childhood educators, special needs teachers, and information technology trainers.

The ICT segment lists nine occupations: systems analysts, software developers, web and multimedia developers, applications programmers, database designers, systems administrators, and computer network professionals.

The release of the list signals Germany's continued effort to address domestic labour shortages by attracting qualified workers from abroad, particularly from regions outside the European Union where skilled professionals are actively seeking international employment opportunities.
