Kennedy Agyapong Jabs Opponents in NPP Flagbearer Race: “You Have Already Failed”

  • Agyapong criticised Ghana's trips to the International Monetary Fund as being a losing strategy
  • Agyapong has started a unity tour to ensure that all grassroots members of the NPP come on board ahead of the 2028 general elections

New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer aspirant Kennedy Agyapong fired some criticism at his opponents in the race.

Without naming names, Agyapong said any candidate whose economic vision for Ghana starts with a trip to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has already failed.

This comes after Ghana secured an IMF bailout during the economic crisis when Mahamudu Bawumia, a frontrunner in the race, was vice president and the head of the economic management team.

In a post online, Agyapong said he was the only candidate with a plan for Ghana.

He advocates for greater self-reliance and economic independence.

"You want to lead Ghana, yet your main concern is who can negotiate best with the IMF? Let me be clear: If your vision for Ghana starts with a trip to the IMF, you have already failed."
"My vision is to build an economy so self-reliant and powerful that the IMF becomes irrelevant to our national conversation."

Aside from Agyapong and Bawumia, other candidates in the race are former General Secretary of the party, Kwabena Agyepong; Abetifi MP Bryan Acheampong, and Former Education Minister Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum.

Figures showed that Bawumia had earned 52% support among NPP delegates, while Agyapong, former Member of Parliament for Assin Central, had 17%.
