The opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has called on the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) to publicly denounce remarks by political commentator Kevin Ekow Taylor directed at former President John Agyekum Kufuor.

In a statement issued on Thursday, May 8, 2026, and signed by its Director of Communications, Richard Ahiagbah, the NPP described the remarks as inappropriate and called for swift action from the NDC leadership.

“The New Patriotic Party (NPP) condemns, in the strongest possible terms, the sustained and vicious attacks by Kevin Ekow Taylor against His Excellency John Agyekum Kufuor, former President of the Republic of Ghana,” the statement read. “This is not politics. This is desecration,” the statement read.

The opposition party argued that the nature of the commentary goes beyond acceptable political discourse.

The NPP praised former President Kufuor’s contributions to national development, stating that he rescued Ghana from economic collapse, strengthened its democracy, and earned the admiration of the country and the world.

It further emphasised that the former President “is not a partisan target; he is a father of this nation.”

NPP accuses NDC of silence

The party also criticised the NDC, led by President John Dramani Mahama, for what it described as a failure to respond to the issue.

According to the statement, Kevin Taylor’s “deep and well-documented ties to the NDC machinery make it impossible for the NDC to feign innocence.”

“When a known operative verbally assaults a former President and the leadership of the NDC watches in silence, their silence becomes an endorsement, enabling the deviance,” the statement said.

As a result of this, the NPP outlined two key demands directed at the NDC and its leadership:

“Kevin Taylor must issue a full, unqualified, and public apology to President Kufuor,” they added.

NPP call for respect in political discourse

The statement also called for civility in public discourse, warning that “there are lines that decency, culture, and conscience forbid us from crossing.”

It urged the NDC to take a clear stance, stating that the party must decide whether it will stand with shared cultural values of the country or with the savagery of Kevin Taylor.

“Ghana is watching and taking note of the indifference of the NDC and the Mahama administration,” the statement concluded.

According to him, such sustained and disrespectful remarks undermine the dignity of Ghana’s democratic discourse and must not be tolerated, regardless of political differences.

“It is only right that the NDC and John Dramani Mahama clearly distance themselves from these comments if they truly believe in decency and respectful political engagement. Silence in moments like this raises serious concerns and can easily be interpreted as tacit approval,” he said.
“We insist on an immediate and unqualified apology from Mr Taylor. Ghana’s democracy thrives on respect, and no individual, especially one who has served this nation with distinction, like President Kufuor, should be subjected to such attacks without consequence,” he added.
