Unemployed Man in Accra Court for Allegedly Defrauding Businessman of GH¢1,860,000

An unemployed 32-year-old man has been arraigned before the Accra Circuit Court on allegations that he deceived a businessman into parting with GH¢1,860,000 by falsely presenting himself as a bank employee.

A report by GhanaWeb indicated that Alexander Adusei Gyan, a resident of Ablekuma, faces a single charge of defrauding by false pretences. He has entered a plea of not guilty.

How Gyan's GH¢1.8m alleged scheme unfolded

According to the prosecution, Gyan approached an Ofankor-based businessman in October 2024 and represented himself as an employee of a prominent bank.

He told the victim he could facilitate a GH¢3 million loan on his behalf, on the condition that the businessman make periodic deposits to qualify for the facility.

The victim complied, transferring amounts ranging from GH¢2,000 to GH¢10,000 at regular intervals to a mobile money account registered in Gyan's name.

Over the course of roughly a year, those transfers accumulated to GH¢1,860,000. The victim received payment receipts after each transaction, lending the scheme an air of legitimacy.

Gyan subsequently advised the businessman to open an account at the bank's Achimota branch as a further step in the loan process.

Shortly afterwards, he ceased all contact and went into hiding.

Gyan's arrest, admission and bail

The businessman filed a formal complaint with the police, who launched a search and eventually apprehended Gyan. In his caution statement,

Gyan admitted to committing the offence and disclosed the name of an alleged accomplice, identified as Desmond Osei.

However, he was unable to assist investigators in locating Osei.

The court subsequently revised Gyan's bail conditions, reducing an initial GH¢2 million bail to GH¢500,000, with two sureties required.

The case has been adjourned for further proceedings.

Meanwhile, YEN.com.gh reported that two security guards attached to Awutu Senya East MP Naa Koryoo Okunor had been arrested in connection with an armed robbery targeting a gold dealer.

The suspects had allegedly worn tactical police and military uniforms issued for their official duties during the attack on the victim.

Investigators had traced one of the suspects after he left his wallet containing personal identification documents at the scene of the robbery.
