Reason why it will be a disaster to sack Ghana coach Otto Addo

  • Otto Addo’s stint as coach has been under scrutiny following Ghana’s failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations
  • The Black Stars have failed to qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations for the first time since 2004 in Tunisia
  • The former African champions will return to action in March for the FIFA 2026 World Cup qualifiers

Former Ghana international Sam Johnson believes it is premature to dismiss Black Stars head coach Otto Addo despite growing calls for his removal.

Addo has faced intense criticism following Ghana's failure to qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) for the first time in 21 years.

The Black Stars endured a disappointing campaign, finishing bottom of Group F without registering a single win.

The team also suffered unexpected home defeats to Angola and Niger, marking one of the lowest points in Ghana’s football history.

"If we replace the coach and technical team with new faces now, it will be a disaster," Johnson told YEN.com.gh.
"I believe we should let him finish the World Cup qualifiers. Who knows? He might succeed in securing qualification. After that, we can evaluate and make a decision as a country. For now, he deserves another chance."

In his five years as president of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Kurt Okraku has worked with four coaches, with Otto Addo returning for a second stint.

The Executive Council of the GFA will meet on Wednesday to discuss the team’s struggles.

The Black Stars finished bottom of Group F after a defeat to Niger in the final round of games at the Accra Sports Stadium on Monday.
