Marc Guehi could face a charge after writing 'I love Jesus' on his captain's armband during Crystal Palace's game against Newcastle United on Saturday.
The Crystal Palace captain wrote the message on his Rainbow laced armband, which supports the LGBTQ+ community.
Why Marc Guehi could face sanctions
The message contradicts the laws of the game, which frown upon any religious or political messages. Law 4 states that;
"Equipment must not have any political, religious or personal slogans, statements or images. Players must not reveal undergarments that show political, religious, personal slogans, statements or images, or advertising other than the manufacturer's logo."
The law further states that any player who does so will be sanctioned by the competition organiser or the world governing body, FIFA.
ESPN reports that the law was tweaked slightly last year to allow all captains to wear a simple armband that conforms to the above-mentioned law. The report adds that his religious message on an armband supporting the LGBTQ+ community could cause problems for him.
Is Marc Guehi a Christian?
The 24-year-old is a devout Christian who regularly thanks God on his social media handles. When he made 100 Premier League appearances, he said,
"100 Premier League appearances is such an honour. I’m grateful to the most high."
What did Sam Morsy do to the LGBTQ+ armband?
The LGBTQ+ armband caused controversy this weekend when Ipswich Town captain Sam Morsy declined to wear it. Morsy, who is a practising Muslim, received the full support of his club.
Disgraced David Coote faces another charge
YEN.com.gh has reported that Premier League referee David Coote is under investigation for allegedly discussing awarding a yellow card with a friend before a Championship match and for past derogatory comments about Liverpool and Jurgen Klopp.
Coote has denied the claims, asserting his integrity, but his future in officiating remains uncertain due to these allegations.
