The authority confirmed on 29 September 2026 that applicants in this category will be required to submit their applications through the country's enhanced Immigration Online system.

The platform was first launched in 2021 and has since been progressively rolled out to cover the most commonly applied-for visa categories in the country.

The updated platform introduces a smarter, more guided application experience. Instead of presenting a fixed set of questions to every applicant, the system uses a dynamic form that adapts to each person's circumstances, prompting them to submit only the documents and evidence relevant to their situation.

One notable feature is the ability to upload a digital passport scan. Once uploaded, the system automatically pulls the relevant passport details into the application, a step designed to cut down on manual entry errors that could otherwise create delays or complications for travel plans.

Immigration New Zealand stated that the changes are intended to deliver shorter processing times, more transparent updates on application status, and greater flexibility for applicants to manage their own submissions throughout the process.

Importantly, residence visa applications for family members will not be affected by this transition and will continue to follow existing procedures for the time being.

Updated immigration rules taking effect in November

Alongside the system changes, Immigration New Zealand is also revising its immigration instructions for affected visa categories, with all updates coming into force on the same date.

Among the key changes, the maximum duration of visitor visas for children of New Zealand residents or citizens will be extended from nine to 12 months. The authority is also clarifying how partnership visa durations are calculated for couples who have lived together for fewer than 12 months, and children who qualify for domestic student status will gain access to the Child of a New Zealand Student Visa.

Further adjustments include clearer guidance on health requirements relating to medical certificates, as well as a new provision allowing certain residence applications to be deferred in situations where ongoing court proceedings may affect the supporting partner's eligibility.

Immigration New Zealand noted that additional details will be published in the weeks ahead of the November transition date.
