The promotion of teachers in the ranks in the Ghana education service has been a contentious issue with many teachers arguing for a better mechanism, that can automatically promote a teacher once they achieve a higher qualification. Ghana Education Service promotion interviews is a new method by the ministry to offer promotion to teachers pushing them to a higher rank. The ability and prowess of the teacher is tested before landing the promotion.
Ranks of teachers in Ghana Education Service
We have compiled a list of ranks in Ghana Education Service, in a descending order of supremacy from the most powerful to the least. It is important to note the Government of Ghana and the Ministry of Education are the highest authority in the ranks in the Ghana education service. They also team up with the parliament as the law-making bodies on matters affecting the education sector in the country. So, here are the various ranks in the Ghana Education Service in a descending order:

Director General of Ghana Education Service
Going by the scheme of service for Ghana Education service, it is the most senior rank in Ghana education service. They are appointed upon the recommendation of the GES council to serve for a term of four years by the President of Ghana. After the term is over, they can renew for the last additional term. They have special responsibilities to ensure that the policies of the education sector in the country are implemented.
They are also involved directly in the appointment of new teachers to the service. They are also at the forefront in fighting for the rights of teachers in the country. For example, they are responsible for negotiations between the Government concerning the Ghana education service pay structure in terms of increase of salaries and allowances.
They play an important role in planning and managing education policies that have been implemented by the Ministry of Education. They also ensure that new laws and policies subscribed by the Government are implemented. They are in charge of all educational programs in Ghana. They provide advisory and managerial support to ensure the mandate of the GES is achieved.
Deputy Director General ranked second in GES
It ranks second in the ranks in Ghana Education Service. They are in charge of providing technical and administrative support to ensure that the objectives of the Ghana Education Service are achieved. The office was officially recognized as an independent body under the Director General according to the Ghana Education Service new ranking.
They co-ordinate all the activities of the division while overseeing the functions of the Ghana Education Service directors. They assume office when the Director General is absent or unable to perform their duties and responsibilities. They also assist in delegating the functions of the Director General.
To be a Deputy Director General,you should have at least 12 years’ experience in a relevant institution with a five years’ experience in a senior management role in a reputable institution. A teaching experience is an advantage to all qualifiers. The applicant must also have a 3 years experience as a Director II Position. Applicants must also pass a highly competitive selection interview delegated by the Public Service Commission in consultation with the Ghana Education Service governing council.
Assistant Director I in GES
In charge of tracking all the progress of policies prescribed by the Ministry of Education. To qualify as an Assistant Director I, applicants must have at least three years or more years continuously working as an assistant director 11. They also monitor the work of all directors.
They must also have a satisfactory work history with a reputable performance and an exemplary conduct. They must be a holder of a master’s degree in management or any related field of study. They must also pass the Ghana education service promotion interviews held by the Ghana Education Service council and must be a professional teacher in practice with the Ghana education service.
Assistant Director II rank in GES
They are the First Assistant Director’s right hand person. They also conduct an overseeing role to ensure that all the functions of the First Assistant director are conducted. They assume office when the First Assistant director is away or unable to conduct their duties and responsibilities.
Holders must have excellent organizational and time management skills in handling all the logistics documents. You must also have served for three or more years as a principal superintendent in GES to be promoted to the rank. You must also hold a diploma or degree in a related field of study.

Principal Superintendent in GES
They are in charge of school districts within their region. Principal Superintendants are responsible for the management of schools in their districts. They form part of the administration of policies as prescribed by the Ministry of Education. They analyze the work of principals assigned with the role of supervising schools in their districts.
They are also in charge of hiring senior staff in the district. They are in charge of overseeing the standards of education and achievement of students. They are also concerned in the development projects in schools. They form part of the council engaging in planning of the budgets and allocation of resources to schools in their districts.
They must be a holder of a degree in any related field of study. They must also have served as a senior superintendent 1 for more than three years continuously. They pass through an interview conducted by the Public Service Commission with consultation with the Ghana Education Service council.
Senior Superintendent I
The Ghana education service pay structure stipulates that a senior superintendent I must have at least three years or more of continued service to the Ghana Education Service. They must also have served as Senior Superintendent 2 before being promoted to the current post. A teacher with more than 5 years can also apply for the job after passing through an interview conducted by the Public Service Commission in consultation with the Ghana Education Service Council.
A teacher who obtains a bachelor's degree in education or in any related field of study qualifies for this position. Also, teachers who have taught for long years can also qualify for the mentioned rank. They also have to sit through an interview conducted by the Public Service Commission in consultation with the Ghana Education Service General Council.
They must also be a holder of diploma in basic education with four years of service or more on the rank of superintendent 11. They ensure the current curriculum is handed over to the different schools in their district. They evaluate the performance of different schools in the district for Ghana Education Service SHS ranking.
Senior Superintendent II
A Senior Superintendent II must have served three years and above continuously in the Ghana education service. They must also have served in the rank of Superintendent for close to two years and more. They must have an exemplary conduct with a reputable proven performance.
Teachers with more than 7 years’ experience can also apply for the job. They will have to pass through an interview through several panels where they will be tested on their knowledge of the organizational structure of Ghana Education Service. The interview questions will be formulated by the Ghana Education Service Council and are prone to change from interview to interview.
They must have served as teachers for four or more years continuously for the Ghana Education Service. They must be licensed and registered under the Ghana’s teacher union. They also must have a diploma or degree in any field of related study.
A Superintendent I is in charge of their school district. They are involved in implementing the school’s vision. They are involved in the day-to-day running of the school affairs. They are in charge of ensuring the welfares of the teachers in the school are implemented and fulfilled.
They also hire, supervise and manage the staff of the school include the principals. They are involved in formulation of policies in consultation with the board of the school to ensure the exemplary performance of the school. An experience in teaching is an added advantage to the job title.
Teacher rank in GES
They are registered members of the Council with a certificate, diploma or degree qualification in a related field of study. They must pass a vetting process and interview conducted by the superintendent 1 and the board of the school to test their skills and prowess.
Based on the organizational structure of Ghana education service, they are directly involved in imparting knowledge to the students. They interact directly with the students throughout the curriculum of the school. They use the policies handed by the Ministry to make changes to the curriculum to ensure the teachers are up to date with the latest learning materials.
They mentor the students and nurture them as being role models to help them achieve their potential. Their work is closely monitored by the board of school and the superintendent 1. Their welfare is handled by the teacher’s union.
