Two towns in race to become the regional capital of North East

- Two towns, Nalerigu and Gambaga, are each asking government to name them as the capital of the newly created North East region

- This comes even before President Akufo-Addo issues a constitutional instrument with regard to the new regions

- Each new region, according to the 2019 budget, will be given GHC20 million as seed capital

There is a growing disagreement over the siting of the capital of the newly created North East region, YEN.com.gh can report.

According to 3news.com, two towns are clamouring for the right to be recognised as the capital of the new region.

This comes after a referendum to create six new regions, and even before President Akufo-Addo issues a constitutional instrument to give effect to the creation of the regions.

The six newly created regions are North East, Ahafo, Bono East, Oti, Savannah and Western North.

Information available indicates that the overlord of Mamprugu, Nayiri Mahama Bohagu Sheriga, asked the government to site the capital at Nalerigu.

The youth of Gambaga have however opposed the idea, and have proposed their town as the capital.

They therefore held a meeting on Saturday, December 29, 2018, to discuss the way forward for the new region and to demand the capital to of North East to be sited at Gambaga.

In their opinion, Gambaga was originally the regional capital of the northern territories during the colonial era.

They added that the town has the necessary infrastructure to hit the ground running with the administration of North East Region, hence the need to give them the capital.

They further noted that Gambaga already has established state institutions and agencies like the Ghana Prisons Service, a Regional Police Command Unit, Social Security and National Insurance Trust, senior high schools and polytechnic, among others.

The government, in the 2019 budget, announced GHC20 million seed capital for each of the six regions.

The amount is to be used for the provision of critical infrastructure to enable the new regions to take off smoothly.
