2020 in review: Achievements that secured Akufo-Addo victory in December polls

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo was re-elected on December 7, 2020, for another four-year term.

He defeated former President John Dramani Mahama his main contender by collecting 51.302% of the votes.

Mahama polled 43.359%.

The votes difference between the two candidates stood at 517, 231, representing a four percentage point, one of the highest since 1996.

As the president-elect prepares to be sworn in on January 7, 2021, YEN.com.gh in this article looks at some of his achievements in 2020.

1. Phase one of Pokuase interchange

Akufo-Addo commissioned Phase One of the newly constructed Pokuase Interchange in the Greater Accra Region.

The project commenced in April 2018, and the interchange was originally proposed as a 3-tier single-point urban interchange.

The contractor, after undertaking a value engineering assessment, proposed to construct a 4-tier Stack Interchange, which was approved by the Ministry for Roads and Highways.

2. 3G Voice/Data site at Atwereboana

The president commissioned the first site of the Rural Telephony and Digital Inclusion Project, at Atwereboana in the Adansi South District, in the Ashanti Region on Wednesday, 4th November 2020.

The Telephony Site is to ensure the provision of basic voice and data connectivity to underserved areas of the country, to help promote digital inclusion, and reduce gap in the digital divide.

The provision of the Rural Telephony Site will allow people in beneficiary rural communities to connect with families and friends outside their localities and also gives them access to online information, educational tools, the ability to access mobile financial services and to transact business nationwide.

3. Obetsebi Lamptey Interchange

The president also commissioned phase one of the Obetsebi Lamptey Interchange Project, which was completed five (5) months ahead of schedule and opened for use by motorists in 2020.

The Completion of Phase 1 of the Obestebi Lamptey Interchange showed “the seriousness that my Government attaches towards addressing the congestion within some of the major cities of our country,” the president during the commissioning.

4. 10,000 hospital beds

Again, in 2020, President Akufo-Addo commissioned an assortment of 10,000 hospital beds for distribution to health facilities across Ghana.

The equipment, which was presented to the Ministry of Health(MOH), was funded under the Infrastructure for Poverty Eradication Programme (IPEP) being implemented by the Ministry of Special Development Initiatives(MSDI).

A brief ceremony was held at the Air Force Base in Burma Camp on Tuesday, 22nd September, 2020 to commemorate the handing over of the equipment to MOH.

5. Bodukwan multi-fruit processing factory

The President commissioned the Bodukwan Multi-Fruit processing Factory, a project operating under Government’s 1-District-1-Factory initiative.

The fruit processing plant, which has an installed capacity of 72 metric tonnes per day, will process seven varieties of fruits and vegetables including mango, pineapple, watermelon, and tomatoes into concentrates for exports and for use by the domestic market.
