After the Tuesday, February 23, single-car accident that involved revered golfer Tiger Woods, a lot of attention has been drawn to the Genesis GV80 Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) the sportsman was driving before the incident.
As separately reported by TUKO.co.ke, the Tuesday accident at Hawthorne Boulevard at Blackhorse Road in Los Angeles left Woods badly injured.
The golfer suffered several fractures on his leg and injuries on other parts of the body after the car veered off the road and rolled downhill. We wish him a quick recovery.
Genesis GV80 SUV
The machine Woods was driving was a Hyundai Genesis GV80 SUV, a car that TUKO.co.ke understands has advanced safety features, among them 10 airbags.
Los Angeles county police confirmed the GV80 was badly damaged, leaving many wondering why the car did not protect Woods from the injuries despite its hi-tech safety measures.
Other observers have urged that the cars's security features kicked in as expected, adding that the situation could have been worse without them and if the driver (Woods) was not wearing a safety belt.
Let us break down other features of the Hyundai Genesis GV80 SUV:
1. 10 airbags
The GV80 SUV has 10 airbags that inflate within 0.3 seconds on impact to protect its five occupants.
Nine airbags are located in places like the steering wheel, doors, and dashboard like most luxury cars.
One airbag has been installed between the driver and the front passenger seat, making the Hyundai Genesis GV80 SUV unique from most models.
The airbag prevents the driver and the front passenger from bumping into each other during a collision.
2. Advanced driver-assistance systems
This computer features a special computer capable of machine learning.
The advanced driver-assistance system has elements like Smart Cruise Control (SSC) and Highway Driving Assist (HDA).
Smart Cruise Control learns the driver's behaviour and, when activated, will control the vehicle deploying the same responses it has learned from the driver over time if the computer considers them safe.
3. Road preview
This is a new feature incorporated in the GV80 which uses the front camera to scan things like bumps and terrain.
If the computers find any obstacles like bumps and or rough terrain, the Electronically Controlled Suspension (ECS) automatically adjusts suspension damping to reduce body movement and wheel impact harshness.
4. Highway Driving Assist II
This system helps the driver make manoeuvres like lane-changes, especially when the turn signal is engaged and when other vehicles are ahead.
5. Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist
It automatically helps bring the car to a stop when there is a collision risk with a vehicle approaching from the left or right side of an intersection.
It also identifies potential collision risks.

6. Blind-Spot Collision-Avoidance Assist
This is a blind spot monitor that helps lessen the chance of impact with a moving vehicle. It alerts the driver if a vehicle is detected in the driver’s blind-spot.
What is a blindspot? This is an area around the vehicle not directly observed by the driver.
7. Lane Follow Assist (LFA)
According to information on the GV80 website, the Lane Follow Assist warns the person behind the wheel through haptic vibrations sent to the steering wheel and audible and visual cues if the vehicle continues to approach the edge of its current lane.
It provides steering assistance to bring the vehicle back on course.
8. Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC)
This feature has a stop-and-go capability that adjusts your preset speed and distance from the vehicle ahead. The vehicle can come to a full stop and then start again without driver input.
9. Driver Attention Warning (DAW)
This system is a driver monitor. It works by analysing the driver's behaviour and the vehicles's position in the plan.
It sets off warning signals to encourage the driver to rest when it detects fatigue or inattentive driving.
10. Rear Cross-Traffic Collision Avoidance-Assist (RCCA)
In-built sensors detect vehicles approaching from the rear, left and right. If any, it alerts the driver and may automatically apply the brakes if a collision appears imminent.
11. Parking Collision-Avoidance Assist-Reverse
It detects vehicles, pedestrians and obstacles to the rear when parking or exiting a park. The GV80 will activate the brakes automatically to prevent a collision.
Cost - The GV80's market price is from KSh 5.4 million.
Top speed - It has a top speed of 240kph.
