Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is widely expected to be selected as the governing New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential candidate for the 2024 general elections.
A recent survey by the European Public Policy Institute (EPPI) revealed that Dr. Bawumia has an “upper hand” over other potential candidates for the flagbearer slot.
He will be battling the likes of Trade and Industry Minister, Alan John Kwadwo Kyeremanten and the Agriculture Minister for the chance to lead the NPP in the elections.
In this article, YEN.com.gh presents four NPP stalwarts rooting for Dr. Bawumia to lead the NPP into the elections with the hope that he will break the 8-year syndrome.
Osei Kyei Mensa Bonsu
The Majority Leader recently called for diversity in the selection of flagbearers for the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) in what many believed was a subtle campaign to have Dr. Bawumia chosen as the party’s flagbearer.
He argued the time has come for the ruling party to wean itself from the ‘Akan party’ tag by choosing flagbearers from different tribes.
“…It is wise that after choosing two Akans – former President Kufuor and current President Akufo-Addo – we present a flagbearer candidate with different ethnicity,” the Suame MP stated on The Probe on Joy News.
Mensa Bonsu again proposed that Kyeremanten be made the running mate for the 2024 general elections.
He said the trade and industry minister is the perfect running mate choice for a non-Akan flagbearer for the 2024 elections.
Kennedy Agyapong
The Assin Central lawmaker, unlike the Majority Leader, was unequivocal in his preference for Dr. Bawumia as flagbearer in the 2024 polls.
Dr. Bawumia, he argued over the years proved to be competent.
“I will go for Bawumia because he can do it,” he stated in a recent interview as filed by Peacefmonline.
Alhaji Mohammed Shukurulah Bamba
Another stalwart of NPP in the Northern Region, Bamba urged the party members to unanimously endorse Dr. Bawumia as the party's 2024 presidential candidate.
He said Dr. Bawumia is the only winsome candidate who could help the party to retain power.
"If we make a mistake and replace the vice president, there will be mass defections, especially from the North," he warned as reported by GNA.
Ama Busia
Sister of late Prime Minister Kofi Abrefa Busia, Ama Busia also joined the calls to make Dr. Bawumia the NPP’s presidential candidate.
According to her, the vice president is a gem.
“I hold Dr. Bawumia in high esteem and have unwavering faith in him,” Ama Busia said in a recent interview as reported by graphic.com.gh.
