An elaborate four-day funeral rite, known in Asante custom as Doteyie, has been scheduled from September 15 to Thursday, September 18, when she will be laid to rest.

On the first day, many Ghanaians thronged the Manhyia Palace to mourn with the Asantehene. Among them were the Freemasons, who were led by Most Worshipful Dr Nortey Kwashie Omaboe, Grand Master, and Very Worshipful Owulaku Hood, District Grand Master, and other distinguished senior brethren.

Their presence served a dual purpose: paying respects to the departed Asantehemaa while offering comfort Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the biological brother of the late queen and the Grand Patron of the Grand Lodge of Ghana.

In a video, members of the Freemason entourage were seen paying homage to the Asantehene individually. Each of their handshakes with Otumfuo was a moment of excitement for them.

Dressed in solemn black mourning clothes and black suits that mark Masonic presence at such occasions, Dr Omaboe offered words of comfort that transcended the ceremony.

After signing the book of condolence, the brethren demonstrated their commitment to relief in concrete terms, presenting a donation of GHS 105,000 on behalf of Ghana's Freemasons.

Otumfuo and Freemasonry

Otumfuo Osei Tutu II is one of the prominent Ghanaians associated with Freemasonry. In 2024, he celebrated his 25th anniversary as a Freemason.

The anniversary, which coincided with his silver jubilee as the Asantehene, saw a good number of Freemasons trooping to the Manhyia Palace to celebrate with him.

In his address, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II stated that he had no regrets about his 25-year membership in Freemasonry.
