Lord Jacob Rothschild, a prominent figure in the world of banking and finance and a member of the renowned Rothschild banking family, has passed away at 87, as announced by his family.
The cause of his death has not been disclosed.
Described by his family as a “towering presence,” Lord Rothschild was celebrated for his contributions to banking and finance, as well as his dedication to philanthropy, environmental causes, and support for Jewish charities.
Lord Rothschild commenced his illustrious banking career with NM Rothschild & Sons in 1963. Later, in 1980, he co-founded J Rothschild Assurance Group, now known as St James’s Place, further solidifying his legacy in the financial sector.
"Our father Jacob was a towering presence in many people’s lives, a superbly accomplished financier, a champion of the arts and culture, a devoted public servant, a passionate supporter of charitable causes in Israel and Jewish culture, a keen environmentalist and much-loved friend, father and grandfather," his family said in a statement to the PA Media news agency.
Celebrating Jacob Rothschild’s legacy
The family revealed plans for a small family ceremony per Jewish customs for Lord Rothschild’s burial, with a memorial service to follow later to honour his life and achievements.
Lord Rothschild, who married Serena Mary Dunn in 1961, was also recognized for his contributions beyond the realm of finance.
In 2002, he was honoured with the title of Member of the Order of Merit by the late Queen, acknowledging his significant contributions and service.
