An elderly resident was left in a state of visible despair after the demolition of his home at the Sakumono Ramsar Site.

A viral Instagram video showed the moment the man, whose identity is yet to be confirmed, broke down as heavy machinery pulled down the structure.

The man was seen being held by two young men as he struggled to contain his emotions while the destruction was ongoing.

In his grief, the elderly man was heard crying out to the officials undertaking the demolition exercise.

His words, "They should kill me," have touched many social media users, highlighting the human cost of the enforcement of land-use policies.

Netizens react to Ramsa Site victim's cry

The demolition exercise has resurfaced long-standing debates regarding buildings in unauthorised locations in Ghana.

While authorities maintain that clearing Ramsar sites is necessary to prevent flooding and protect waterways, critics have questioned the issuance of permits by local officials.
