Akpaloo sparks outrage with helicopter crash comments
On Wednesday, August 6, 2025, Ghana was hit by a devastating incident in which eight prominent Ghanaians lost their lives in a military helicopter crash.
The victims of the tragic accident included Ghana’s Defence Minister, Dr Edward Omane Boamah; the Minister of Environment, Science and Technology, Ibrahim Muntala Mohammed; Deputy National Security Coordinator, Limuna Muniru; former Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr Samuel Sarpong; and former NDC Parliamentary candidate for Obuasi East, Samuel Aboagye.
The crew members who also lost their lives included Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Martin Twum-Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah.
Reacting to the tragic incident in a radio interview, Kofi Akpaloo attributed the helicopter crash to divine intervention.
He reportedly stated that the mere fact that the accident occurred on a cocoa farm was a symbolic reminder to politicians against lying to cocoa farmers.
He referenced President John Mahama’s promise to increase the cocoa price from GH¢3,100 to GH¢6,000 as the basis for his claims.
These remarks, however, sparked public outrage, with many Ghanaians labelling them insensitive and disrespectful to the memory of the eight fallen national heroes.
Based on the overwhelming public sentiment against his statement, Kofi Akpaloo rendered an unqualified apology to President Mahama and the people of Ghana.
Speaking to the media on August 8, 2025, the LPG leader admitted that his comments were unfortunate and ill-timed.
"I'm not happy at all, and I feel terrible that my comments caused pain to many people and families. I'm sincerely sorry and ask for forgiveness," he said.

EOCO arrests and detains Chairman Wontumi

The Economic and Organised Crime Office reportedly picked him up after he reported for questioning on Tuesday, 27 May 2025.
This was after a failed attempt to arrest him on Friday, 23 May 2025, when heavily armed National Security operatives stormed his residence to execute a search warrant.
Chairman Wontumi's arrest was reportedly linked to a $55 million fraud matter allegedly involving his company, Akonta Mining.
