NDC would need new candidate for 2028
Ghana’s 1992 Constitution restricts a president to two four-year terms, making a maximum of eight years in office.
Having already served his first term from 2013 to 2017, President Mahama will not be eligible to run again for the NDC in 2028 after securing his second term in the 2024 elections.
This means the ruling NDC must hold primaries in 2027 to select a new presidential candidate for the December 7, 2028, general elections.

Asiedu Nketia speaks on NDC flagbearer race
Meanwhile, YEN.com.gh reported that NDC chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketia urged presidential hopefuls in the party to focus on supporting the Mahama administration.
He warned that early campaigning and disunity could disrupt government activities and weaken the party's future chances at the polls.
Nketia questioned the rush to replace John Mahama, saying party members in key roles needed to remain committed to delivering results.
