  • The experienced politician criticised wealthy aspirants for using their financial contributions as campaign tools

The former Member of Parliament for Adansi Asokwa in the Ashanti Region, Kobina Tahir Hammond, has urged delegates of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to elect Dr Mahamudu Bawumia as their flagbearer for the 2028 election.

The former MP, affectionately called KT Hammond, suggested that Dr Bawumia is the best bet for Ghana, and for that matter, must be elected as the presidential candidate of the party.

"If we don't make this man (Dr Bawumia) the President of Ghana, we will suffer," he cautioned.

KT Hammond made these remarks while speaking with some NPP delegates at the Adansi Asokwa constituency during Dr Bawumia's campaign tour of the Ashanti Region ahead of the flagbearer race on January 31, 2026.

He further questioned why some NPP presidential aspirants were using their financial contributions to the party as a campaign strategy.

The experienced politician, who served as the Minister for Trade and Industry under former President Akufo-Addo, said those presidential aspirants who claimed to be rich were nowhere to be found when the party was facing serious financial challenges in the 1990s and 2000s.

"Where were these people when the party needed money in the 1990s and 2000s? When stalwarts of the NPP went round sourcing for funds to build the party into a winning machine, these people were nowhere to be found. Those of us who embarked on that journey have not come out to brag about it," he said.
