Government Appointees Contribute GH¢6.1m to Medical Trust Fund

The government has successfully transferred GH¢6.1 million to the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, popularly referred to as "Mahama Cares".
The substantial sum was generated through a series of salary deductions from President John Dramani Mahama and his team of political appointees.

Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the Minister of State in charge of Government Communications, announced the development via social media on Thursday, May 7 2026.
He confirmed that the Controller and Accountant-General had officially completed the transfer of the funds in accordance with executive instructions.

Mahama's directive triggers donations from appointees
The financial contribution to the Mahama Cares fund follows a commitment made by the President during the inaugural launch of the fund last year.
At that time, President Mahama led by example to encourage broader participation from his administration to bolster healthcare resources.
"At the launch of the Ghana Medical Trust Fund (Mahama Cares) last year, President Mahama pledged to donate six months of his salary to the Fund," he wrote.
“The Controller and Accountant-General has formally notified Government that he has deducted and transferred a total of GH¢6.1 million to the Fund pursuant to the President’s directive,” he added.
