Ghana Education Service Cautions Schools Against Charging Unauthrised Fees
- The Ghana Education Service (GES) has warned schools against charging any unauthorised fees from students or parents
- It reiterated that no institution has been approved to collect feeding fees or similar payments under the Free SHS policy
- Parents and students have been urged to report any school found engaging in such practices for investigation and action
The Ghana Education Service (GES) has clarified that it has not granted permission to any educational institution to levy fees on students or parents, regardless of the justification or terminology used.
This directive comes as a response to reports of schools seeking payments despite the existing national policy.

In an official statement shared via social media and distributed to the Ghana News Agency, the GES called on the general public to ignore claims made by individuals attempting to spread misinformation regarding school costs.
The service emphasised that there has been no change in the official stance regarding student levies.
The service specifically addressed allegations that some institutions have been demanding money for meals.
“Nonetheless, any school found to be charging money under the guise of feeding fees, as alleged, is acting unlawfully and without the approval of Management. Government’s commitment to not only maintain the Free SHS policy, but improve upon it, has not changed,” the GES stated.
GES warns against Illegal charges
The GES made it clear that any efforts to subvert the Free Senior High School (SHS) policy would be met with serious consequences.
“Any attempt to undermine this policy-whether through the spread of false information or through clandestinely imposing fees on students-will be treated as an act contrary to national interest.”
To ensure compliance, the GES has advised parents and students who have been asked to pay feeding fees to bring such matters to the attention of its management.
The GES has pledged to investigate all reported incidents and take the necessary disciplinary actions against any school found to be in breach of these regulations.
