Asiedu Nketiah Reacts to Okatakyie Afrifa's Arrest: "How Did He Suddenly Become Sick?"

National Democratic Congress (NDC) National Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketiah has questioned the circumstances surrounding the deteriorating health of Okatakyie Afrifa, a media personality and NPP parliamentary aspirant for the Afigya Sekyere East Constituency in the Ashanti Region, after his arrest.

Nketiah raised the concerns during an interview on Okay FM on 5 August 2026, pointing to a visible contrast between Afrifa's physical condition at the point of arrest and his state when he was due to appear before a court the following day.

The NDC chairman told Okay FM that footage broadcast on television showed Afrifa in good health as he was led into a vehicle by law enforcement officers.

However, by the time Afrifa was expected to face the court, he had reportedly taken ill and appeared visibly weakened.

"Recently, I saw Okatakyie Afrifa when he was arrested. We all saw it on television. When he was being escorted into the vehicle, he looked fit and healthy," Asiedu Nketiah said.

"The next day, when he was supposed to appear in court, all of a sudden he was wearing a neck brace and could not walk. How did he suddenly become sick?"

The NDC chairman did not stop at noting the change in Afrifa's condition. He went further to raise the possibility that police officers may have subjected the NPP activist to physical harm while he was held in custody.

"Does it mean the police assaulted him in the cells? If it had happened during the arrest, we would have seen it," he said.

Afrifa Arrested After Constituency Election Disturbances

YEN.com.gh reported that Okatakyie Afrifa was taken into custody following chaos that disrupted the NPP executive elections in the Afigya Sekyere East Constituency.

He has since been granted bail and had not been convicted of any offence at the time of this report.

Asiedu Nketiah's remarks drew attention to the broader question of the treatment of suspects in police custody, framing the visible change in Afrifa's health as something that warranted an explanation from the relevant authorities.
