Arsenal has once again captured the spotlight with the announcement of Italian defender Riccardo Calafiori’s signing.
The versatile defender, who made a notable impact at UEFA Euro 2024, was one of the standout players in the tournament and attracted significant transfer interest.
The former AS Roma star, who enjoyed a stellar 2023/24 season, was reportedly sought after by several clubs, including Chelsea and Arsenal.
Ultimately, the 22-year-old chose to join Arsenal. In the wake of this signing, Arsenal’s coach, Mikel Arteta, delivered a subtle dig at rivals like Chelsea, who were also keen on securing Calafiori.
Arteta aims a subtle dig at Chelsea
Speaking in an interview the 42-year-old emphasised that despite interest from other clubs and potential big-money moves, Calafiori chose to join Arsenal.
The 42-year-old Spanish coach detailed that he spoke with the Italian star several times to ensure the deal remained on track.
As quoted by Metro Sports, Arteta said:
“I spoke to him once or twice and was aware of other teams' interest. I wasn’t certain if we could secure him, but he was clear: ‘Let me know when you’re ready, my bags are packed, and I just want to come to Arsenal.’
Those were his exact words. When you have someone so eager and determined to join us and help improve the team, it’s incredibly powerful. As a club, we should be very proud of that.”
Arteta’s comments seemed to be a subtle dig at Chelsea, especially given Calafiori’s remarks about choosing the best project for his career before leaving Bologna.
Calafiori joins an already solid Arsenal defence, which conceded only 29 goals in the Premier League last season, according to Fotmob. The former Basel defender is expected to provide additional depth both in central defence and at left-back.
