But rather than simply adding more players, Alonso now wants to reduce a squad he believes is too large.
The biggest concern is at centre-back. After the arrival of Maxence Lacroix, Alonso has indicated that he wants only four or five central defenders available to him.
Which Chelsea players could leave this summer?
Trevoh Chalobah is reportedly close to joining Como for £31 million, while Axel Disasi could leave for around £25 million after spending the second half of last season on loan at West Ham United.
Benoit Badiashile is valued at £30 million, while right-back Malo Gusto could command as much as £75 million despite being considered surplus to requirements.
The biggest potential sale involves Enzo Fernandez. The Argentina midfielder, signed from Benfica for £106 million in January 2023, has attracted interest from elsewhere, with Chelsea reportedly demanding £120 million.
Pedro Neto is another name on the list, with the Portuguese winger valued at £70 million.
Chelsea's attacking clearout
Chelsea's forward line is also facing major changes following the arrival of Danny Welbeck.
Liam Delap, who struggled during his first season after joining from Ipswich Town for £30 million, is among those who could be moved on. Nicolas Jackson is valued at £65 million, while Marc Guiu could leave for £25 million.

David Datro Fofana has a much lower £3 million valuation, while Emmanuel Emegha, despite only recently arriving, has reportedly been placed among the potential departures at £20 million.
Jordan Henderson's arrival has also added another experienced option to the squad.
The scale of the proposed clearout shows the size of Alonso's task. Chelsea have spent heavily to strengthen the squad, but the Spaniard now faces the equally important job of deciding who no longer fits his plans.
