2026 hantavirus outbreak sparks fear

According to reports, a cruise ship, identified as MV Hondius, a Dutch-operated expedition vessel that departed from Argentina and has been sailing between South America, the South Atlantic and the Canary Islands en route to Cabo Verde, had developed an outbreak of the illness onboard.

Three people reportedly died from the illness, with five more suspected cases.

Several passengers reportedly disembarked from the MV Hondius in St Helena, sparking fear of a global outbreak.

“WHO has also informed 12 countries whose nationals disembarked in Saint Helena. Those 12 countries are Canada, Denmark, Germany, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Singapore, Sweden, Switzerland, Türkiye, the United Kingdom, and the United States of America.”

The WHO added that the chances of an outbreak are low as the hantavirus is originally hosted in rodents and cannot be transferred between humans.
