Born on 22nd June 1947 in Accra, Jerry John Rawlings is a former head of the Ghanaian government and he came to power in 1992. His father, James Ramsey was Scotttish whle his mother Victoria Agbotui originated form Dzelukope, Ghana. Jerry Jon Rawlings studied his ‘O’ levels in Achimota school after which he headed to Teshie, Ghana Military Academy and Training School where he joined cadet.
During his stay at the army, he is known to have stood against the atrocities committed by the ruling council. He also led a revolt to oust the council from power. He orchestrated an attempted coup on the then General Akuffo. He was arrested and given a death sentence. He had both military support and public support during his court trials.
At one time, his fellow military counterparts broke him away from jail. They then masterminded another coup attempt which ousted General Akuffo and the Supreme Military Council from power. Together they helped solve all atrocities committed against fellow Ghanaians.
He laid down his tools from the army, and he jumped onto the political bandwagon that was sweeping through the country. He is the founder member of the National Democratic Congress, which won the 1992 general election with JJ Rawlings elected president. He served for two terms before stepping down.
JJ Rawlings Family
Before his birth, his father, James Ramsey, worked as a chemist in the Gold coast while his mother was the head of the catering department at State House. JJ Rawlings first met his wife while they were both studying at Achitoma School. They parted ways as he joined the Army Military Academy and Training while she advanced to the University of Science and Technology. She also had leadership skills which crowned her student leader and an executive of hall of residence.
JJ Rawlings got married back in 1977, to his beautiful wife Nana Konadu Agyeman in Ridge church. JJ Rawlings wife gave birth to four children. The firstborn child was born in 1978; he was named Emanatory Rawlings. He was blessed with two more daughters and one son. He named the other two daughters; Yaa Asantewaa Rawlings and Amina Rawlings. They named their only son Kimathi Rawlings. JJ Rawlings and family have led a quiet life away from the public eyes.
JJ Rawlings daughters are currently important people in the society each accomplishing many in their fields. Zanetor Agyeman Rawlings, their firstborn daughter, is famous for her efforts in championing for the rights of children and women in Ghana.
She has founded several foundations to help spread the word of the rights of children and women in the society. Unlike her father, in her early life, she steered away from the political limelight.
She found solace in humanitarian work. During the Gol Oil fire and flood incident, she was at the frontline offering relief food to the victims of the plague. Recently, she followed her father’s footsteps by vying for a parliamentary seat for Klottey Korle constituency. She won the seat during the general elections, and currently, she is a sitting member of the parliament.
