It brought in several Galaxy editions, including the A10, M30, A30, and A50. While all these three have worked well, the A50 leads the pack because of its impressive string of premium features at pocket-friendly prices.

The good news with the Samsung A50 is that it is one of the best high-end budget phones in Ghana. It has a reliable camera, headphone jack, long-lasting battery, and an in-screen fingerprint reader. Its AMOLED display offers excellent quality and the One UI software is unique and also better than what other Android brands have been producing.

The good

  • Modern design with premium look and feel
  • Excellent battery backup
  • Better performance for average users over a prolonged period
  • Supports HD streaming

Although the A50 has ergonomic features, it disappoints when it comes to the speaker. The speaker does not produce the best sound for such a high-end phone. Samsung also put a fingerprint sensor on the device. However, the idea of not having it at the back of the phone makes the sensor or reader inaccessible.

The bad

  • Not ideal for low-light photography
  • Its video resolution may not be the best for high gaming performance
  • Is Samsung A50 water-resistant?

As a Galaxy device, it has protection from water, grime, and dirt. It has an IP68 rating, which means it is water-resistant. Thus, it will survive when it falls in 1.5 meters of water for 30 minutes. After 30 minutes, the device will not withstand the water damage. However, do not confuse it with waterproof because it will let in water.

Hardware

The phone also adds more security with the fingerprint sensor. It is a high-tech biometric authentication mechanism that ensures you are the only person that can access the device and unlock it. However, having it on-screen instead of the back of the device makes it inaccessible.

Other useful hardware features on the phone include an Octa-core processor to allow for smooth multitasking, 64GB internal memory to keep up with regular recording and storage of files, and 4GB RAM to accomplish demanding tasks at once.

Design

The A50 comes in a premium design with amazing colours. It only weighs 166 grams and measures 158.5 x 74.7 x 7.7mm. You can get it in a variety of colours, including coral, blue, black, or white. Because of its weight and measurements, it is comfortable to hold in your hand. Furthermore, its 3D glasstic back, smooth, and seamless curves make it look sleek.

Display

The A50 comes with a screen size of 6.4 inches and a Super AMOLED Infinity-U display. Due to its large display, it covers the device from one edge to another and makes the screen brighter with vibrant colours. However, the display isn't as big as what you will find in the Galaxy A51. Despite this, when you add the FHD+ resolution, the A50 becomes a useful gadget for taking videos or streaming.

Processor, storage, and performance

As noted, the A50 comes with an Octa-core (4x2.3 GHz Cortex-A73 & 4x1.7 GHz Cortex-A53) processor and 64GB or 128GB storage with a MicroSD slot that you can expand up to 512GB. The Oca-core offers better performance for people that want to multitask on their devices. That means it can handle heavy tasks such as playing video games or running intensive applications that require a lot of resources. However, the processor tends to drain the battery faster.

With 64GB or 128GB of internal storage, space is enough to save hundreds if not thousands of files. You can also install as many apps as possible, which can run at the same time and not feel the phone lagging. Even with many applications taking advantage of local caching to save on your data usage, you will remain with more space to store additional files. And if you use the SD card to expand the storage to 512GB, you will never run out of space using the A50.

Battery

The phone has a long-lasting 4000 mAh battery. Given the size of the screen, device resolution, processor, and software optimisation expect the battery to last for at least four hours of continuous usage on a full charge. For moderate usage, it will last for eight hours. But if you do not use it at all such that it only draws 1 mA of power, expect it to last for 4,000 hours.

Speaker and call quality

The A50 only has a single loudspeaker at the bottom. While it works well when it comes to loudness, its output is inadequate. It also does not work well in the high frequency. In general, the phone has a better call quality because of the loud sound, but it is not rich or clean as you may want.

Software

The Samsung Galaxy A50 comes with Android 9.0 (Pie). It is also upgradable to Android 10, One UI 2.0. Android 9.0 OS is useful for the device because it launches applications faster and uses less memory.

OS and features

The OS is easier to use because it suggests the apps you would like to open and helps to optimise the CPU to improve battery performance. It has many features, including gesture-based navigation system instead of the standard Back, Home, and Recent buttons, adaptive battery and brightness, and screenshot shortcut. However, it suffers from a few performance issues. The advantage is you can upgrade to Android 10 and enjoy new features.

The three cameras on the device help to capture your moments in various lighting. You will get crisp shots during the day or more light and less noise during the night. Either way, the cameras ensure sharp detail whenever you are taking photos.

With 1080p for video resolution, it works well by showing the entire frame in one frame instead of splitting it up. Although this requires a lot of computing power, it allows for sharper images and live streaming. However, 30fps makes it less cinematic.
